I've peeled the anti-glare layer off the Kindle Scribe display and the result is a 100% improvement in reading quality.
Hi everyone, the whole thing of this very long post is that I used a heat gun to peel off the antiglare layer from the display, which greatly improves the reading quality.
(I’m not so much good at English, so I’m sorry if there may be some inevitable mistakes in the language.)
Warning: This might be just another way to try to use the kindle scribe more effectively; it might not be suitable for everyone, especially people who are always messy, impatient, and usually break a thing.
Problem with reading
I have had Kindle Scribe for a year, but I found it very hard to read because of the anti-glare layer on top of the glass screen. I found that the more gaps between the antiglare layer and the e-ink display, the more blur and worse in the text clarity caused, esp. when I read from non-straight angles(which is quite annoying for me).
So, I’ve determined to find a way to peel the anti-glare layer off. And when it was finished, I can read it all day with the best text clarity(enjoy the 10.3” 300 dpi clarity screen) and eye comfort, like physical books. And I also find that glare from the glass doesn’t diminish my reading comfort at all(I can still focus so well on my reading).
The procedures to remove the Anti-glare layer
I've seen some videos on YouTube that use wet tissue soaking on the display for 3-6 hours, but it is too dangerous for this delicate device. So I thought that this wet method was not suitable.
Then, I had an idea that the glue that sticks the AG layer can be softened with heat(like any smartphone glue). Then I try using the hot air blower(heat gun) to warm the display and try to peel the layer off. This method work for me.
To be precise, the following are the details of what I've done.
Before starting, There are necessary things to know and prepare.
- There are 3 layers of screen in participating, (1) the Anti-glare layer, (2) the glue layer, (3) the glass layer. Because the glass layer can withstand the cutter/blade without any scratch, you can do many things on those two outer layers without damaging the glass layer.
- You can either remove the AG layer partially (only on the reading areas) or completely remove it (even the black area around the display part).
- Partial removal will leave the black border around the reading area, which helps cover the excess light from the front-light LED. But it will leave an uneven layer on the screen which is not suitable for placing the tempered glass protector.
- Complete removal will expose the excess light from the front-light led, and nake all the inner parts of the device, which may be poor esthetic to some people(but look awesome for a few nerds). For the excess light, you can use some non-transparent tape to cover and decorate it later. And the most important is that it allows placing the tempered glass which will help protect the device to be more long-lasting.
- In addition, if you've done the partial removal and want to do complete removal later, it will be much more tedious work to remove the remaining (less area of the plastic layer for grabbing and peeling). So I recommend determining the method you like first. For me, I like the complete removal, because I want to place the tempered glass to make the precious display long laster.
- The equipment:
- Heat gun - to warm and soften the glue layer
- Cutter - to do an incision and lift the AG layer
- Some plastic ruler - to scrape off the remaining glue layer from the glass layer(the most tedious step)
Then, the following are the methods for removing
- Use the cutter to cut the outline incision on the screen depending on your preferred removal type. Also, don't worry, a common cutter can't scratch the glass layer beneath, you should also cut it with slow but firm force deeply to the glass layer(if it is deep enough, you will feel the smoothness of the glass surface) and in one sharp stroke(shouldn't repeatedly cut it which will cause a non-continuous and unclean border).
